Inheritance – An Honest Review 3/10

Updated: Nov 28, 2020

Lily Collins and Simon Pegg star in this story of a young woman who's father has recently passed, and low and behold she has received an inheritance (no spoilers there). Her brother receives a large sum of money, and she receives a much smaller sum, which comes as no surprise. However an envelope from the lawyer leads her to a family secret that she must take care of... but who is this stranger and why was this burden left to her?

Lily Collins can do serious, so I don't want to take anything away from her acting abilities in this review, but the actual character was pretty dull. She's an attorney so of course she's very mature, and she has a husband and daughter so the story hints that she's a family person. But absolutely was not feeling the loving mother vibes. Lauren is left in despair by the revelations of a family secret, and as the secret is unveiled she finds out that there are more topics of conversation to come with the mysterious man in a facility under the woods on the family's land. Simon Pegg does well with the complexity of his character, as all is not as it seems, but again there's just something lacking. Not the fault of the actor but the writing in itself.

As the disgruntled hostage releases more information to Lauren she finds that her family's reputation and livelihood are at risk. Lots of skeletons in the closet, and some interesting revelations about other members of her family and the type of people they are. With a brother she supports lovingly making use of people to promote his election in an underhand way, Lauren must decide where her loyalties lie - if the secrets come out she will lose her position as attorney general, and could even face jail time. She also has the dilemma of whether or not to speak to any of the family about the person being held captive, so ensure she has all of the necessary details to make a decision on whether or not he should remain where he is, or be released into the world.

There are certainly thriller vibes throughout, and an element of mystery does stir up a few questions for the viewer, but up until the last segment of the movie I personally didn't feel like I was compelled to continue watching. There wasn't a whole lot of oomph about it. Yes the twist is interesting, so that's something to look forward to, but I think there needed to be something else earlier in the plot. If you go in with low expectations you may be able to enjoy it as an average. Not something I will be watching again in the future sadly hence my 3/10 rating.
